In case seawater is used as cooling water, it is necessary to disinfect seawater to prevent deposition of marine organisms such as barnacles, sea mussels and other shellfish in the cooling water system. Once this deposition occurs, it jeopardizes operation safety of cooling systems by deterioration of heat exchange efficiency, reduction of seawater flow rates and corrosion of materials in cooling systems.ch011.jpg

Marine growths would rapidly reduce the heat transfer capability in condensing plants and increase the hydraulical losses in seawater piping.

 

Principle

2Cl- → Cl2 + 2e-
[Cathode reaction]
2Na+ + 2H2O + 2e- → 2NaOH + H2
[Reaction in electrolysis cell]
2NaOH + Cl2 → NaCl + NaClO + H2O
[Total reaction]
NaCl + H2O + 2F → NaClO + H2 ↑
